Veterans in the classroom

Are you looking to infuse history, increase patriotism, or promote citizenship education in your classroom? VFW Post 549 has a wealth of knowledge—and a wealth of members—ready to support your students’ growth as young Americans. Some of the things we can tailor to your needs:

  • The Pledge of Allegiance and its meaning (generally for younger kids)

  • Facts about the American Flag

  • A “living history” presentation—after all, some of our members have truly lived the history of U.S. freedom

November is the VFW’s “Veterans in the Classroom” Month. Contact us today to develop a program for your classroom.

FLag etiquette and disposal

Post 549 offers American Flag services for your needs.

  • Flag etiquette information and lessons for you, your class, your Scout troop, or any other organization

  • Honorable flag retirement and disposal when a flag become unserviceable

  • Joint flag retirement ceremonies with Scouts, JROTC, CAP, or military units

deployed troop support

As VFW and Auxiliary members, we know the sacrifices our deployed men and women make. Sometimes the simplest amenities, the smallest tokens of home, can make the difference to someone serving abroad.

  • We’re happy to take donations of dry goods and snacks, toiletries, greeting cards, and general gifts of gratitude. Contact us if you have an idea for a donation drive or specific donation.

  • So much of service is family. The VFW’s Military Assistance Program (MAP) is an incredible way to take care of deployed families.

    • A large part of MAP is the Adopt-a-Unit program, providing VFW Posts and their Auxiliaries the opportunity to adopt hundreds of military units around the world.

    • Adopt-a-Unit's goal is to develop supportive relationships with units before, during and after deployments to help deliver the vast network of resources the VFW has available to the military.
